CYCLING IN LITHUANIA – FROM THE CAPITAL TO THE SEASIDE (Vilnius – Curonian Spit – Klaipeda)

CYCLING ITINERARY (cycling appr. 395 km)

Day 1: VILNIUS

Arrival in Vilnius. Individual transfer to your hotel (not included). Check-in at the hotel. Information meeting and delivery of rental bicycles at the hotel, where you will be greeted by BALTIC BIKE TRAVEL / BaltiCCycle.eu representative.

OVERNIGHT at centrally located 3* hotel in VILNIUS

Day 2: VILNIUS-LENTVARIS-TRAKAI (app. 30 km)

Morning free for exploring Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania for more than 600 years. In the afternoon bicycling to Trakai, a former capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, for visiting the insular castle of the 14th century, erected on a small island in Lake Galve. Arrival in Trakai, check-in at hotel.

Day 3: TRAKAI-ELEKTRENAI-ZASLIAI-KAUNAS (cycling app. 60 km)

Bicycling on a picturesque rolling road through the land of lakes and hills, passing by Elektrenai where the most powerful thermal power station in Lithuania is located. Finish cycling in Zasliai, where you’ll take a train (not included) for a half-hour ride to Kaunas, the second largest city and former temporary capital of Lithuania in 1919-1939. Arrival in Kaunas, check-in at the hotel.

Day 4: KAUNAS-ZAPYSKIS-VILKIJA-RAUDONE (app. 65 km)

Morning free for exploring the Old Town of Kaunas, then bicycling along the Nemunas River to Mikytai, where you’ll take a ferry across the river to Vilkija. Continue bicycling along the river to Raudone famous for impressive 16^th-17^thcentury castle. En route crossing the Dubysa River and passing by Veliuona mound hill recognized as the grave of Grand Duke Gediminas. Arrival in Raudone, check-in at private guesthouse.

Day 5: RAUDONE-JURBARKAS-TAURAGE (app. 68 km)

Continue cycling along the Nemunas river to Jurbarkas passing by another impressive 16^th-17^thcentury castle of Panemune. From Jurbarkas cycle towards Smalininkai, known for many ages as a border town between Lithuania and the lands of the Klaipeda Region occupied by the Teutonic Order. From there you’ll leave the Nemunas River for a while and cycle through the woods towards Taurage, passing by Viesvile Nature Reserve. Arrival in Taurage, check-in at the hotel.

Day 6: TAURAGE-VAINUTAS-ZEMAICIU NAUMIESTIS-MACIKAI-SILUTE (app. 65 km)

Cycling on countryside roads to Silute via via Macikai, which is known for the museum of German writer Hermann Sudermann. Arrival in Silute, check-in at the hotel.

Day 7: SILUTE -KINTAI-VENTE-NIDA (app. 48 km)

Morning cycle to Vente Horn where you may visit the 19^thcentury lighthouse and the Ornithological Station that retells their stories and offers an amazing view of the landscape and a glimpse of the shining sand dunes of the Curonian Spit washed by the Baltic Sea from one side and the Curonian Lagoon from other side. Take a boat for crossing the Curonian Lagoon to Nida which was an old fishmen’s village, but nowadays the largest settlement on the Curonian Spit and one of the most beautiful resorts in Lithuania. Arrival in Nida, check-in at the hotel.

Day 8: NIDA-JUODKRANTE-KLAIPEDA (59 km)

Explore Nida where you may go for cycling along impressive sand dunes and visiting the most popular places of interest – the Fisherman’s House, the summer house of famous German writer Thomas Mann, and the Amber Gallery. Afterwards cycle on an asphalt bike path through woods along the Curonian Spit to Klaipeda. Short stop beyond Pervalka for a walk on a wooden path to the Dead Dunes where you will discover a panoramic view of the Curonian Lagoon and the Baltic Sea. Moreover, you can see a colony of grey herons and cormorants near Juodkrante and the Hill of Witches, which houses a hundred fanciful and folksy wooden sculptures scattered along a forest path in Juodkrante village. Arrival inKlaipeda, where you’ll take a ferry to the Old Town.Check-in at the hotel.

Meeting with BALTIC BIKE TRAVEL / BaltiCCycle.eu representative who will collect the rental bicycles (if any). OVERNIGHT at centrally located 3* hotel in KLAIPEDA.

Day 9: KLAIPEDA

Breakfast at the hotel. End of the tour.
